This is BASS's response to an email a guy on another board sent to them about Ranger's open letter stating they would drop sponsorship because of the WCF event.
Also I would like to know what the KBF's official stand on the WCF format is. I'm completely against it, and I think a mojority of members are as well. There are enough unsafe boaters out there without the WCF's racing influence. If WCF catches on big there will be more people practicing their race techniques in high performance bass boats and getting killed, injuring others, and bringing negative attitudes to the sport. You want a boating skill test, run a few miles down the fat part of Ky lake on a windy Sunday afternoon.
Anyway, here's the BASS response to the guy's email:
We have no intention of using this format for the Bassmaster Tournament Trail events. The Invitational Tournament Trails and the Top 150 Pro-Am Trail will continue to be traditional fishing tournaments as you know them now. We fully realize that those events are what made B.A.S.S. popular and we will continue to highlight them on television and in Bassmaster and B.A.S.S. Times.
That is the main reason we formed a new company, World Championship Fishing (WCF). While it carries the "tag-line," A B.A.S.S. Santioned Event, and currently many of the same B.A.S.S. employees run the events, WCF events are separate from B.A.S.S.. Eventually, we will have dedicated personnel and equipment for WCF events with little or no cross-over by B.A.S.S. staff.
These WCF events give us the opportunity to highlight a small, select group of bass fishing professionals in non-traditional fishing events. They are not meant to replace existing bass fishing tournaments, only to supplement them. These events also give us the vehicle through which to attract new, non-endemic, sponsors. The first event showed that this was possible with 38,000 spectators in three days and we will continue to work in that direction.
Just as NASCAR events are conducted on "closed" courses, the same is true for WCF. We will continue to highlight safety and continue to discourage boaters from operating their boats in this manner. However, as tournaments did for bass boats, we believe that WCF events will help with boat innovations that will have a postive impact on future operators.
Now please understand that I'm not naive enough to believe that this brief explanation will change your views of fishing/boat handling events. That is not my intention. The only intent of this response is to address some of your questions and to explain our views.
Thanks for your email
